History
James Athol Colvin was born and raised in the city of Port Arthur, Ontario (now Thunder Bay). He attended the University of Toronto and received an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1949, and undertook post-graduate studies at the University of London, England and earned a Doctorate in History and Politics in 1953.
After he graduated from the University of London, he entered the Canadian Civil Service as an Archivist. He then joined the Department of External Affairs as Deputy Head of Personnel Division in 1954, and subsequently worked with the department's Inspection Service where he traveled throughout Europe and Asia. From 1958 to 1965 he served abroad at the Canadian Embassy in Paris, and Chicago and prior to accepting his position at Fanshawe College in 1967, he was Deputy Head of the department's United States Division.
